Presentation Outcomes:
Thinking about the future can be challenging and emotional for families of children with I/DD, however, adults with I/DD make a better transition from the family home when a future plan is in place. Special Needs trusts can allow beneficiaries to live their best lives without being hindered by resource and asset limits that could otherwise keep them at or below poverty level and to be able to save excess funds without fear of losing state Medicaid coverage or SSI and allow our beneficiaries to and enable them to have access to technology or experiences that would otherwise be out of reach if they had their available resources limited in sustaining a quality of life that would be desirable and fulfilling. Public benefits as a lifeline are crucially important to marginalized people of color who experience even more hardship than their disabilities.
Learning Objectives:
  1. Explain what a special needs trust is and how it can be a valuable financial planning tool.
  2. How to set aside funds now to cover expenses later.
  3. Compare features of special needs trust to ABLE
  4. Share strategies.for planning for financial wellbeing in adulthood.
