Focus on Behavior: Practices to Promote Resilience, Setting Boundaries with Compassion and Protect Relationships HP4

Data across the mental health and behavioral analytic fields have identified trauma-informed interventions and components of building resilient learning environments. This presentation embeds these elements into a discussion on how to address challenging behavior with compassion, while setting boundaries and protecting adult-child relationships. The presenter from OESD 114 will describe their early learning coaching model, rooted in Washington Pyramid Model(WAPM) practices, to provide participants with an opportunity to engage with a practice that encompasses acknowledgement of trauma and its impact, ensuring safety and trust, promoting choice and shared governance and emphasizes skill building. Elements of coaching, collaboration and trauma-informed responses to challenging behavior will be synthesized in an interactive learning exchange with participants. By the end of the presentation participants will be able to: Identify the impacts of trauma and inequity on development and behavior. Identify how WAPM and coaching practices provide protective factors that promote resilience and strengthen relationships. Identify how to respond to challenging behavior and set boundaries while preventing re-traumatization and protecting relationships. Engage in a live coaching session with opportunity for engagement in modeling, practice and feedback which participants could continue using throughout their practice. Additional resources and materials: Participants will leave with access to a scripted trauma informed response to challenging behavior, coaching resources and an option to connect with a larger learning community.

Paola Stepney is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) and currently works as a behavior specialist with OESD (Olympic Educational Service District) serving early learning programs and K-12. She has dedicated the past 20 years to supporting families, educators and students in developing and implementing programs and interventions focused on promoting self- advocacy, skill development, and positive behavior change. She is passionate about disseminating culturally humble, trauma-informed and student-centered approaches to behavior change. Most recently she has been working as a Practice Based Coach, implementing the Washington Pyramid Model in early learning programs.

Presentation Outcomes:
Taking a trauma-informed and culturally responsive approach to early learning increases family involvement, develops resiliency in communities, decreases unfair exclusionary discipline practices, and improves long-term educational outcomes. Outcomes for the specific interventions we will be describing include: -Practitioner-based coaching models direct benefit on learners: Decrease in inequitable disciplinary practices (suspensions and exclusions) and improvements to classroom environments -Scripted response to challenging behavior: Application of trauma-informed practices, with a focus on building resilience through building connections, will be presented in an interactive activity embedding components of discussed coaching. Outcomes to this activity include active collaboration and scenario-based practice.
